A one month journal about my adventures in Arles during my mediation internship at the Rencontres de la Photographie the second year round.

lost in translation
idiom. : to fail to have the same meaning or effectiveness when it is translated into another language.
Do you know where you anchor yourself
Is it point A or point B in a country sense
Is it point A, B, C, D, or E city wise
Or is it the extensive street-wise?
Of childhood. Before teenage hood.
Teenage hood where every opportunity to delve back was seized eagerly almost desperately.
Accompanied by the flatness of what you now lived inside of, the void of teenage hood.
It wasn’t the first time you changed schools so despite being a shy child, it wasn’t much of a problem. For 2 days it was complicated but like everyone who is new, that was no news.
“Oh you’re French wow that’s so cool, could you say something in French?” As your English teacher from highschool once said, Americans find the French, and especially the French accent very “sexy”. Proof is all of the English language’s sexy expressions come from French. No translations were fit enough to express the Latin ways.
You never come from where you are at the moment. You’re always exotic. And a good English homework helper.
Speaking of latin ways. You have another funny story. One where, as you were introduced to friends of your new friends one wanted to greet you in the “circle” in which they were both in their minds and physically, she got up from her seated position, and she “turned her cheek” or more like “elle a tendu la joue”. That definitely doesn’t sound good in English, now you see why Americans aren’t ones for expressions in that area. Back to the story. Translation for an American kid: “Hey bestie! Why won’t you give me a Bear Hug!”
All hail culture shock.
So despite being far away from familiarity your habits live on.
Translate that for an 11-year-old American kid.
- “What have we got here? Candy or a spell! Trick or treat! Oh no then excuse me but we do not know that here, here is an explanatory text what frightening kids! Here pick your candy! Have a nice evening and Happy Halloween!”
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
- Drain sweet potatoes and place in a medium baking dish. Distribute butter pieces evenly over the sweet potatoes. Sprinkle with brown sugar. Layer with miniature marshmallows.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the marshmallows have melted.
- Mode d’emploi
This is called filling the void. Yes with food and recipes. Tender memories mixed in the batter. But they are no longer placed in the same context. In the same place, by the same person you were.
And now.
You now fear the day you will grasp once again what has been removed from your life for so many years. Having a sense of distance between the places you are attached to gives a sense of comfort
For now, the distance and emotions that come with that void slowly carved are a comfort. A longing. A fuel.
Le plus éloigné tu te trouves du point d’ancrage familial, le mieux tu te portes, the more appealing it seems. As a uprooted child comfort is found in the vastness you get to travel/live/exist in.
The farther you are from the family anchor, the better it feels, le plus attrayant cela te paraît.
But since closure hasn’t been given to you, the coping mechanism is what precedes.
Remedy homesickness by being homesick.
You will never know what really being home is.
Home is not a place, home is in your mind where you decide it is.
It’s the small memories you’ve created with the few people you keep in the different places that are home. It’s not one specific place. Ce n’est pas un endroit. It’s not.
But you just can’t help the feeling of searching. Of denial that the first place was the best.
C’est assez amusant.”Perks of having 2 passports you guess.
2 passports that seem so convenient. Some people think it’s the best thing one could have. Some no. Both are correct. But is there one place where it’s better? Ultimately it’s up to you and your little feelings. Not what some people say about it being “un pays qui n’est vraiment plus ce qu’il était, moi si j’étais toi je m’en éloignerais le plus possible parce que j’étais comme toi je l’ai aimé ce pays”
So
Out of Spite
And need of identity
You renew it.
X I am a U.S citizen living outside the country, and my intent to return is uncertain.
And you vote
Now we can’t resume this whole in just three pages but we can try and translate a part of it.
Translate this syndrome.
Syndrome of pieced people.
Pieced by different countries
Different cultures
That lay lost between them.
Lost in the change every time.
Lost in translation.

Puis-je me considérer…
HOWLING for the masses
I should be given a prize
Pff c’est has-been
It’s a web
Qu’on surf
On surf
On télécharge
On collecte
Best of Bon Jovi à 20$
Let live rock
Let die my thin allowance
Ou encore
Target
pour acheter Backspacer de Pearl Jam en 2009
Oui mon père avait couru à Target
Pourquoi target
Target normalement c’est
Everything and anything for cheap
L’endroit où tout le monde va
Toute la masse en masse
venue pour Backspacer
Tiny bit of history for you:
Pearl Jam
Bye-bye Sony
And hello being a free agent
Xbox
Verizon
iTunes
Et
Target
Pour papa…Target Brooklyn
On peut pas tout avoir sur Manhattan
Tout cela donc pour
Toucher les masses
Music for the masses …pardon me Depeche mode
Spread the web
The diary of Alicia Keys
Musicaux
À n’en plus finir
Et parfois où l’on se perd
Et on perd quelques heures au passage
A force de cliquer
Mal de l’époque
Dit-on
Le scroll
Si c’était un parchemin
Nous serions sauvés
La fin serait au loin
Enfant
So long switches
Now it’s a play button
Je me rappelle
Des heures passées à
Clicker
regarder
Disponible
Mais
Pas acquise
Dans mon petit range disque US Open jaune
Dead was musical intimacy
Privacy
Intimate lives
Madison square garden and the corner bar
Universes away
(For more facts about Pearl Jam, see Pearl Jam Twenty by Cameron Crowe)
Bien que
Moins ergonomique
Moins fourni
Come again?
Comment?
Le déroulé de l’experimentation:
Je mords
À grandes dents
Les opportunités de voir des concerts
Je traque les opportunités
De sentir la chair de poule
Au premier crissement des enceintes
Bientôt 17 ans
Les addictions sont difficiles à dompter
Surtout quand notre ami toile yt n’aide pas
Goosebumps incoming through waves
Pop
Folk
Blues
Mais
L’écran
The screen
Screen
Screech
*screech*
Me coupe
Fait le médiateur
Entre
Mes yeux
Live
Living image
Moving image
Me trahissait
Jaune
US Open
J’avais encore
Le goût de la satisfaction
De découvrir de la musique
Et de continuer à l’écouter
Sans me lasser
Maintenant des centaines
De gigas
Qui flottent
Ne suffisent à
Rassasier
L’addiction à la nouveauté
Je ne crois
Que je peux qualifier ce besoin
Seulement d’une
Curiosité
De découvrir
À ce stade
Je suis avide
D’images
Live
De vie
D’images en mouvement
De moving images
Qui s’accélèrent
Et défilent
Elles viennent par vagues
Et on veut qu’elles arrivent à flots
Par lots
Et les accélérer
Oui
Suffit
De cliquer
x2
En bas à droite
Next video in…
C’est vrai tout ça
C’est se construire
Une culture
C’est apprendre
Se nourrir
Pour produire
En l’occurence
Dans notre pratique
Artistique
Virginia Woolf a dit
Pour qu’une femme écrive
Il lui faut une pièce à elle
Et
500 livres par an
Autant dire
Le quota est atteint en terme
D’objets culturels
Qu’ils soient
De niche
Populaire
De masse
Physiques
Ou numériques
Rien que les images
En l’espace d’une heure
Et je suis
Généreuse
On l’atteint
Il faut donc
Voir
Lire
écouter
Apprendre
Des grands
Mais je me questionne
Sur la bascule
La bascule de
L’insuffisant, du
Juste
Et du
Trop plein
On pourrait y penser
Notre
Intake
Can we
Take it all
?
Est-ce qu’on ralentit
Comme la RAM
De notre
PC
Disque
Dur
Externe
Je me demande
Va t-on arriver à faire mieux
Ou
Peut-être pas mieux
Mais autrement
Passer par
Des canaux alternatifs
Se renouveler
Et pas passer par la route principale
Où les masses vont
Main road
Main stream
Mainstream
On entend dire
Que tout se ressemble
Qu’on ne trouve plus rien
Hors
Du commun
Livres, séries, dramas, rap, films, pop, POP, POPULAR, POP CULTURE, POP ART
Dans notre partage infernal
Avec tous les outils
De la toile
En un claquement
En un cliquement
De doigts
On peut tous/t faire
On veut faire comme on a entendu
Donc on produit
On reproduit
À la chaine
Chacun de notre côté
Chacun son fil
Rafistolé à la toile
Webbed together
Vu que cela plaît
Que les flux principaux
Adhèrent
Et que la résistance
Au défilement
Et l’accélération
Est faible
On reproduit
À l’infini
On va dire
Faute au
Capitalisme
Oui
L’usine doit devenir plus productive
Produisons plus
Avec la même main d’oeuvre
Et le même temps
À la chaine
Tous enchaînés
Dans cette mécanique
Sans réfléchir
Et
Voila
Où je voudrais faiblement
pointer
Malgré l’épuisement
Et le manque
De temps
Le manque de temps
Le manque de réflexion
Avons-nous
À force de voir
De regarder
Venir les flots par lots
D’images
De réfléchir
Murir
Et renouveler
Mon pessimisme va transpirer mais
Peut-on réussir à renouveler l’art
Distordu
Approprié
Visual arts:
The visual arts are art forms such as painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, photography, video, filmmaking, comics, design, crafts, and architecture
Si l’on prend
Exclusivement
Tous
Ou presque
C’est donc
Notre fonctionnement
On l’étale
Story time #3
Insoutenables
La différence
La matière
L’importance d’économiser
La matière
Le fait de modifier une
matière
de ses mains
Et non
De l’insaisissable
Parallel
Auriez-vous stocké
10 000 lettres papier
Comme
On stocke
10 000 e-mails

Jusqu’a devenir pauvre

On expérimente

Easy peasy lemon squeezy less work for me
)
Et de concepts (contemporary art keeps knocking back at our door)

Glossary for fun and thinking games:
Essay: An essay is a concise piece of nonfiction writing that aims to either inform the reader about a topic or argue a particular perspective. It can either be formal or informal in nature. Most academic essays are highly formal, whereas informal essays are commonly found in journal entries, social media, or even blog posts.
As we can see from this essay definition, the beauty of essays lies in their versatility. From the exploration of complex scientific concepts to the history and evolution of everyday objects, they can cover a vast range of topics.

let’s miseducately take a seat here
This “blended” album is an homage to the three women who shaped different selves of mine over the years through music and the rest.
I invite you to read or listen to the following albums before reading the words that follow
Or maybe just let them bathe the atmosphere in the background for the words to sink in as you read and maybe echo in sound, in mind
The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill – Lauryn Hill
Here – Alicia Keys
A Seat At The Table – Solange
Intro:
Let’s take a seat at my desk right here, right now.
Right here, an ocean from the place I sat at the desk
The desk I sat at, sat next to, listened next to in that tiny living room
Right here, an ocean from the place I first saw the cover
The cover that stuck to me to this day, be it on the screen as I-Tuned in, be it on the cd booklet, be it on the wall of my teen cave, be it on the back of my computed screen
Right here, an ocean from the place I first heard what she told him, what she told me, from baby me to me talking to you through these words
Let’s take a seat at this desk and listen to what they’ve told us
Let’s take a seat at this desk and comprehend what they’ve gifted us
Let’s take a seat at this desk and feel the sound around us
From the sound to the words to the meaning that echoes in the outside world
Baby me heard, lying on the floor, from speaker to ear not yet to my thoughts
Therefore I felt
Felt the vibe, felt the tears, felt the joy, felt the love
I didn’t hear her lose one, let the ex-factor leave, welcome her Zion, warn about the doo-wop, the superstars she sold, look out for the final hour, feel so good hurting bad, love herself instead of love him, preach forgiveness for those who left her, stride the streets that nurtured her, when nothing mattered anymore, when a negative became a positive, when once miseducated she defined her destiny, when she couldn’t take her eyes off him, and told him
She told him, she told her, she told them, she told us
These albums, the songs, these melodies, these words
From all three and others among
Starting in that living room an ocean from this desk here to the rooms of mine on this side
Have miseducated me
Track 1:
There’s this orange desk
Lauryn sits at it
Alicia and Solange take a seat
They see Lauryn imprinted on it
Name and face
Miseducation face up
This is where you all listen to her miseducation at
At the desk
You sit in her place when she doesn’t respond to her name in the intro
Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill?
Lauryn Hill…
You slip in her stead
You listen at her desk
You listen to what she has learned not being at her desk
You hear what she is teaching you through her songs, her words, her beats she acquired
She acquired from venturing from street to street, city to city, culture to culture, genre to genre, middle-class to fame
Every ghetto, every city, and every suburban place she’s been
You skip from classroom to beat in the streets, in her home, in her heart
You go through the lessons taught outside of the classroom you are in
She created her classroom on tape
She created her own education on tape
And she let others sit at her desk until this day 26 years later
Not far from there, another table seems inviting
Solange shifts to one of the seats adorning it
In tow Lauryn and Alicia follow
At her table
That now is theirs
The remaining chairs left to those who desire
Like us listeners
Like the space of a classroom
It brings safety
Like the sound of the songs playing
They hug us
Like the conversations unfolding at the desks and tables
They let us share
Repressed is the oppression
“If you don’t understand us and understand what we’ve been through, then you probably wouldn’t understand what this moment is about. This is home. This is where we’re from. This is where we belong.”
And is appreciated and listened to what has been served on the table
Alicia now stays seated
Seated to stay here
Intralude :
From hearing these songs on the other side of the ocean to where I’m at now
Connecting them to that living room on that side
In that city
In it’s concrete
59th Street Columbus Circle, transfer to the 1B-, C-, and the D-train
Brooklyn-bound A. 42nd street is next, stand clear of the closing doors
In it’s feeling
In it’s culture
“Appreciating culture that is not just our own” Lauryn said
Surrounding it till weld together and brazen to my memories
Melted together in the pot
Savouring the puzzled parts of the world together
Bringing the taste of the big apple on this side
To hearing them in the living room on this side
Making those cultures co-existing here in my mind despite their lack on this side
The gospel defeating in every ghetto, every city
To finally listening to them in the backseat of the car through plugged headphones
To finally going from speaker to ear to thought
In the backseat of that car I became conscious
Conscious of the words
Conscious of the meaning they held
Conscious of what I felt
Conscious of what they meant to me
Conscious of how they were bound to me
Despite our differences society defines negatively but is a positive
Positive as how good it felt back on the other side of the ocean
Positive in their co-existence humanity wants to separate
Separate and lead to the existence of the voices in these albums
These voices that stayed on a loop since
These voices that taught me skinny legs, kung-fu and all your quirks are cool
These voices that taught me to not really care
Not really care for the voices that praised that I grew up there, raised the stupidity of my move on this side of the ocean
These voices that taught me not to see the limit from kung-fu to the arts
These voices that were the cranes in the sky that lugged me to my seat now
These voices that uncensor mine as I go on writing these words
Words of feeling, emotions coming from within
Words of gratitude to my teachers of twenty years and more to come
Teachers of us for us
Track 2:
All three women at the table
Lauryn was in the spotlight from teen to now
She bowed “haitian by association” next to her two comrades as refugees
The fugees
Solo she came to be
Emancipated, consequence of the miscommunication
She lost one
Stripped and naked as she could be
Zion in her belly
Giving the keys to the sound and lyrics that came to be
Locked away from the surrounding pleas to instead use her head
For her spotlight was at stake should she use her heart
From low pressure of just staying true to her woman self as a fugee, refugee
To high pressure of telling her truth without refuge
Heart pressure was monitored by those who thought they were higher
Till with music to inspire she soared higher
To the superstar with the Grammys in her arms
For her and others to hear what she wanted to see exist
Alicia came around here twenty years later after having seen the spotlight next to the prince
She went from how come you don’t call to not really caring
She went there, she came here and told you to let her in
In as you let the wind in as her Shaolin crew put the song to begin
Trailing behind Solange silenced for years
Being the copied shadow of her sister Queen B
Accompanied by the tracks she didn’t want to see come to be
She sat at another table and wrote her invitation
Weary of the world and running away from the metal clouds that made her mad
She asked herself where the peace was
If it was the success within
The glory within her
The anger within her
In the music it came with her
For people to understand the record
For people to understand her
As master P told her
For them by them
For us by us
Intralude :
I remember hearing them around
I remember them when I was lying on that rug when my only care was saving enough to buy an album at J&R
I remember them in my first iPod stick
I remember them in the plane
I remember them when I was at my desk doing my homework seriously those Saturdays
I remember them when they weren’t considered cool in middle school
I remember them as I first set foot in high school
I remember them when it was the only thing we could settle on together with mom in the car
I remember them as I came home alone from treatment in the mountains in the summer
I remember them when the ones that came in high school were unexpected albums
I remember getting them for christmas
I remember them on loop in the middle of the snow
I remember them when I was weary of my first relationship
I remember them when I was tired of punching the air every night
I remember them when we were locked up for months with nothing better to do
I remember them when we could finally see May together with friends
I remember them when I was infatuated
I remember them when I chose to st-art again
I remember them when I didn’t know what to draw
I remember them when I stopped punching the air
I remember them when I moved out
I remember them when I moved in
I remember them when I made bread on Saturdays
I remember them when my landlady went haywire
I remember them when I went bananas because of her
I remember them when I went up north-east
I remember them when they echoed in the small apartment like the one with the rug I lied on
I remember them as I write here
I hear them around
I hear them as I grow
I hear them shaping me
I hear them as I become she
Track 3:
She was pregnant
She was pregnant
She was pregnant
They were pregnant
Around the table they pass around the feelings and the memories
Lauryn felt overwhelmed with her hand on her belly
She let Zion help her create
She let him be her salvation
She let herself fall in love again
She gave birth to Zion and the 1998 miseducation
Alicia was on fire
And it unexpectedly lit up Egypt
Who once born became her first puzzle piece to her blended family
Working on it for the love that it’s worth
Fame be pawned for blended family is all she cared
Beatz and Keys together out in the news
To writing blended family right here in 2016
HERE in the news
Solange was at her table
Back in her grandparents’ town
Back in Louisiana
Back at writing
Her comeback in the sunlight, shadow forgotten
Back to her roots
With it came the running around the house
Little feet coursing around
Accompanied as she took care
She wrote the ode to self care
In the confines of the house and the roots of her burgeoning family
She took care of existing without the heartbreak of the outside world
She took care of forgetting temporarily of the rage
She took care of forgetting the inequality
She took care of telling her son to love
She took care of telling her son he was safe
She took care of leaving the borderline
She took care of taking it off, breaking it off tonight because she’s safe tonight
She took care because she was a lover on the mission
She took care of that, the length of a song
telling us to take care
Intralude:
Between concrete walls
Tomboys we thrived in our fifth-grade high
Hair tie and shorts on
Banned were the skirts-off
Teens came to be and it just came to be ourselves
Tomboys to just being
Being without conforming to the standard at its peak
Closing off the grandma cries for flowing hair
Closing off the girls’ cries for eye lining their eyes
Striving to be fly as ourselves
Striving to be fly for ourselves
Track 4:
Take care
Self-care
Self-image
Image-care
Coming closer to the other two around the table
Alicia told them about the girl from her class in PS 257
They passed around the bottle of Vaseline and rubbed their faces
They weren’t even black anymore
They just glowed
Just as that girl said
They just were themselves
For as beauty is only in the eyes of the beholder
Maybelline-free since 2016 Alicia said
Spotlight be damned
Curves and curls bare
On the black and white cover here
Insecurities be damned
Stretch marks bare
Cocoa butter we care
Conversing and singing in cocoa butter we share
Gender be damned
Insecurities we share
Just like Tina shared
Solange shared her mom Tina’s words
Tina taught her black is beautiful
Tina taught her there is pride in black beauty
Tina taught her to wear her crown
Solange then shared her own words
Solange said not to touch her hair
Solange said not to touch the crown that she wears
Solange said it’s the feelings she wears
Solange said it was her soul
From being in her Tina’s hair salon to wearing her crown today
The journey from young girl to junior high school to adulthood
The journey of learning the signals the crown says
The journey of the significance in black culture
The journey of letting it speak and protect it
For social and political and appropriated it can be
The feelings it wears should be cared for
Solange told them about her bare cover
Alicia went bare
Solange went unfinished
With clips still in her hair
Curls still in care
She said stop don’t touch my hair anymore
A seat she took in front of the camera
The crown reflects the flash
This is the hair she said
This is the hair I will be seated at the table with
Transitional black Mona-Lisa it will be
Powerful as two Cleopatras
In all skinny legs, press, and curls glory
Lauryn told them what the girl in that class said
Sometimes it doesn’t matter what they wear or what they look like
You just want to talk to them because they glow
Then through her glow Lauryn told them
Though she did warn about the glow
Because remember you’re only human
Respect is just a minimum
So watch out because sometimes girls and boys only want that thing
Fuck, pretend, and do it again
So watch out if it isn’t genuine
So watch out if you aren’t genuine
Hair weaves like Europeans, fake nails done by Koreans
So watch out to not to sell your soul just for that thing
Remember
She picking all the wrong ones
And she’s looking for the right one in the wrong place
You remember her face? The prettiest face, prettiest face
(Oh yeah, oh yeah)
She looking for fulfillment
You would think she was looking for love, searching for love
She just looking to be taken care of
(Oh yeah, oh yeah)
You can find her in Harlem or Brooklyn
You can find her in Brixton or Kingston, she’s a queen
Know what I mean?
(Oh yeah, oh yeah)
She think she want a baby and she do it with the wrong one
‘Cause she’s looking for something, but he don’t really care
He don’t really care
And life just isn’t fair
Intralude:
Kinder in the Garden high
Wasn’t big enough to be let alone
Wasn’t flying high enough alone
The kid in me needed babysitting time to time
To keep me seating when my mom needed to leave her own Zion
Kept down on the playground
Yvonne used to watch over my jumps
Yvonne used to keep me from scraping my knees as I fell from the high
Yvonne used to stand so tall
Yvonne used to watch over me with the shiniest crown
Yvonne used to have the silkiest crown ever
Yvonne had to care for her flat crown
Yvonne went every week to get her curls flat-ironed out
Yvonne went to the hair salon on those streets made of concrete
Between jumps in the streets, I would pass by those salons
Seeing the different braided pictures on display
Pictures that braided into my mind
Braids and curls I kept on thinking of
Thinking of them as the most beautiful crowns I could see
Thinking why should they be ironed out to shine
Thinking of them when I saw Alicia bring out HERE
Thinking it’s the prettiest out here
Thinking I missed seeing those crowns around after not being in that same concrete on this side of the ocean
Thinking naively why don’t we all feel the same
When they shone so bright in the city, in the classroom, at the desks
Track 5:
As the songs play in the background of this seated conversation
Chairs were added
Chairs were tucked away
Musical chairs away
Lauryn was the first to settle in a chair when the music stopped
She came with the intro
Followed then the track, the interludes
She then went with the outro
Alicia and Solange then simultaneously sat in the 2016 chairs
They came with the intros
Followed by the tracks, the interludes
They then went with the outros
1998 to 2016
Going back and forth
Going from chair to chair
Echoing each other despite the time spans
From whisper to ear to ear
Going back and forth
Between the struggles in common despite the time spans
Welcoming other participants in the users of these intro, tracks, interludes, and outros
Welcoming other participants in these conversations seated at the table
It’s not just Lauryn
It’s not just Alicia
It’s not just Solange
It’s them
And it’s Ras Baraka as the miseducating teacher
And it’s the kids in the classroom
And it’s Master P narrating at the table, from slave he leaves as royalty, as the chosen one
And it’s Tina Lawson
And it’s her Dad
And it’s her friends here
And it’s Elaine Brown
And they’re here for words to speak louder and clearer without singing, rapping, or screaming
And they come across just as powerful as the musical rhythms
And they come across in those musical chairs
With a point to be made across
Be it lessons on love in the classroom by poet and now mayor Ras Baraka
Be it praises of stretch marks and insecurities talk with Alicia and her friends
Be it reminders of black oppression and hostility towards black women in America in the form of the poem Black Mother read by Black Panther Party chairwoman Elaine Brown
Be it stories about embracing black beauty glowing in the eyes of a child and her baby oil and Vaseline
Be it knowing your worth and seeing No Limits through the eyes of self-made, southern black man Master P
Be it being lost in this vacuum between integration and segregation, and racism with the retelling of the childhood of Solange’s Dad Who Was Mad
Be it black kids having to figure it out themselves lacking help from say rehabs in the ghetto, there’s only the self-rehab cries Master P
Be it what Tina Taught
Tina taught accepting beauty in black
Tina taught being proud of it, loving it, not wanting anything else
Tina taught what it was to be sad to be pro-black but be deemed anti-white for embracing it
Tina taught it’s not hating white culture
Tina taught that it’s not reverse racism
Tina taught that there was a black history month but not a white history month because we only ever were taught white history
Tina taught that we shouldn’t be angry
And then it comes back to Lauryn
She lost one after the breakup as he gained the world at the price of his soul, so she let the ex-factor go, she welcomed Zion, she warned about the doo-wop to self-preserve and keep your self-respect, she sold superstars as the ones in the spotlight dropped tired ones that didn’t inspire to go any higher, she waited for the final hour of black success prevented, she hurt so bad, she used to love him, she asked the father to forgive him, she grew up in every ghetto and every city, then nothing even mattered, everything was everything when the power was fair, she miseducated herself with her aspirations and dreams despite everything being everything, she couldn’t take her eyes off him, and she told him…
And then it comes back to Alicia
She began with the poor of her words, she sang the gospel from Harlem, she pawned it all because family goes first, she killed mama, she didn’t really care but she was looking for the right one in the wrong place and she was a queen but he didn’t really care either, she saw the illusion of bliss amid the smoke, she worked on her blended family, she worked on it with him, she couldn’t be herself anymore, She said they were than they knew because no fate could not be created, she didn’t know where to begin, she then saw holy war in a world divided by difference, sexuality, and skin, she cried hallelujah, she saw what was in common…
And then it comes back to Solange
She rose, walked her way, crumbled and rose, she was weary or who would go finding her body devalued in this society, she saw the cranes in the sky, she was mad, she said not to wait for her, she said not to touch her hair, her crown, she didn’t know where to go from there as she kept them company, she said it was for them by them and not to be mad if you couldn’t sing along, she retreated from the borderline for her self care, she saw Junie jump on it during Morrison’s funk, she said not to wish her well, she saw the mens scales shine in the night to the cost of…
And they echo each other as do the meanings that double and web their words, their melodies, their feelings, their truths along with the joys and sorrows
And they act as healing provokers, towards race, towards women, towards beings
They sit at the table, feeling and talking and letting it all be complicated, painful, and beautiful as they all take turns unfolding under the covers
Intralude:
Amid the big concrete apple
While growing baby-high to teen-high
I came upon the boroughs
To stumble upon the pieces of the globe
Paving my collection of pieces the streets would give me
From that side to the other to my little bundle to carry on
Carry on to this side of the ocean
From emotion to affection
These pieces stayed by my side
Shouldering me from then to-day
To shaping my ways
And treasured will they stay
To learn and appreciate
What comes from here and whatever there
Un-prejudiced as can be
Leading to sorrow adult-high
As the view unfolds provoking the fall
From the ways of the world
Track 6:
Scattered on the table bonding the three
Lay the pieces of the world they summoned
Mustered together
Call was the r&b, the reggae, the hip hop, the soul, the zydeco, the gospel
Rifling through Wu-tang to Gladys Knight and the pips and slipping in Santana
From Africa to America to Louisiana and Alabama
Passing France and Asia to Chinatown and Harlem NY
To land in NJ
And round again
The music was lit
And the literature came with it
Summoned was the bible, Black Mother, The Miseducation of the Negro
Inviting with it the words of its creators
Creating the constellation
Carter Woodson had prophesied- “Some Negro with esthetic appreciation would construct from collected fragments of Negro music a grand opera that would move humanity to repentance.”
Lauryn to thank we have
Eclecticism and aspiration she had
Appreciating cultures that weren’t just her own from childhood she bega
Weaving, piecing influences yet assembled
Creating her sound
Her sound to share
Popular it became and popular it was
From popular culture around the world to creating popular music
Popular in the reach and not in the pop beat
Reaching to the people, to the artists
Connecting to Alicia
Connecting to Solange
Connecting to the rest
Connecting to them
Connecting them
Connecting us
Outro:
If their trio hadn’t reached me before eighteen
These words I wouldn’t be writing
Most of what I submitted to get into prep class
Was based on what I had amassed from their teachings
Echoing the news from the other side of the ocean
If their trio hadn’t reached me before eighteen
Along with the rest of my web of the world
I wouldn’t have even wanted to write these words from lack of discovery of this world
So rich is the world
So reach the world

Bits and pieces of these sources and previous of their albums and lives were deliberately quoted either in color or quotes in this essay
summer haze
Flicking seasons has become a habit
A close friend
A familiar feeling
I know when to switch and flick now
When I first feel the wind hugging my legs
When shorts shrink to my calves then my thighs
When instead of dragging my rain boots, I speed up in my sneakers
I know when to switch and flick the big light off and then the mighty sun lingers on
I switch and flick year on, day on
In class from hour to hour, we flick our different switches
De copain en friend, from teacher to the other professeur
As I said it’s familiar
But comes the wind and kick in my shoes
The big switch flicks
I know when to switch it
It’s when I jump
I’m in the air
Flick
Feuillette
Change
Échange
And land
The switches I use year on flick solely in my head
If I flick them now, in this land, dans cette terre
Nobody will see them switch, nobody will hear them switch
Allo la terre!
I only flick one switch in this land
And put on hold flicking all the other ones
A month-long they will rest
While I pester in this other land
Familiar but far from the rest of my year-long habits
The opening habit after switching
Is running and tumbling and falling at the foot of the swing
In my grandparents’ yard
I swing on the swing
Comme je me balance back and forth
Like I swing d’avant en arrière
I am pushed
Je suis tirée
Je suis tiraillée
I am torn
I am pulled
Je suis poussée
Hold it
Tiens-le
Tiens les deux côtés de la balançoire
I’m holding it
Holding it in
As I learned early on
That’s what we do when we swing daily, monthly, yearly
When I swing in this land
I put on hold the swinging across the big blue
They are only switches
Every year a month-long switch occurs when the wind kicks in and the sweat shines in
For a month I put on hold swings on the other side
It’s always one or the other
And they are never really together
Swinging in harmony
Swinging in rhythm
Swinging in symbiosis
Se balançant en symbiose
This one year
I knew I was gonna switch things up
I would swing the other way round
I would swing in my grandparents’ backyard longer than the previous times
Before that, I clicked while slowing down my swing back home
I clicked this place
I clicked that street
I snapped that road there
I snapped my ties to those swings
Thinking I could tie the knots back together next year come
Had I known those snapped streets
Would be the last threads of evidence on those printed sheets
Proving that I used to swing back and forth between those streets
As shorts came trending back year after year
I kept on believing I would pack them
And bring them swinging back to the other side
Even when I outgrew the ones that once knew those swings
I kept on hoping to introduce the new ones to my old turf
But the decade is fast approaching
I hardly exchange my shorts for new ones
I just get hand me downs from my parents
The ones they used to wear while watching me swing back and forth
When I was knee-high
Standing now as tall as my mom
Cup of coffee dangling from my hand
New found comfort in this new year
Mimicking habits of the people in those streets
As I take a break from going back and forth
My swings aren’t as powerful now
They only reach the end of this land
Le bout de cette terre
They don’t touch the sea anymore
But it’s enough to hit “home”
Not the one with my switches
But the one where my mom, my dad, my brother swing in
The one I swung in during my teen years
The ones where I swung with them
Celles où on a balancé ensemble
Celles où j’ai balancé seule dans ce qui me manquait et ce qui me retenait
The ones where I swung alone between what I missed and what held me back
I now go back to those teen years
When I go back swinging to my parents’ home
When I go back swinging to them
When I wear shorts now
It’s to swing with them
je file des feels
La journée qui file, elle file,
Les gens filent, leurs paroles filent
Elles filent dans ma tête in your head
In your head they stay
Parce qu’elles filent sans oublier de semer une part d’elle in your head
Elles filent comme l’esprit file
Comme à cet instant, in your bed, elles filent
Elles filent d’une personne à une autre, d’une parole dite à l’autre
La pensée manque de trébucher tant de personnes aujourd’hui ont défilé, in front of your eyes, in your mind
Ils ont fait filé in your head les pensées jusqu’à atteindre l’autre côté de l’océan
In front of you they reside on the other side of the ocean
Elles y sont allées, elles y sont restées, elles y sont
Ce n’est pas la première fois depuis neuf ans qu’elles y filent you keep going back and forth forgetting your body each time
L’esprit, les pensées eux changent, they go back and forth back and forth back and forth
They can stay a short while or a long while or a long while
They are staying a while tonight
Pourquoi plus longtemps ce soir? You don’t know, they told you so, they’re showing you what you can’t see but feel, you feel in your eyes the watering waterworks, you feel the water that separates you from the other side.
Ce soir filent-elles plus longtemps? Plus vite? Plus lourdement? Do you feel heavier?
Do you feel heavier night after night?
Liberty
Liberté que les personnes ressentent, qu’ils prennent à refiler et à filer là-bas, without you
Liberty you don’t feel it weighs down weighs you down in your bed your body in your bed but you can’t help but feel in your head the liberties your thoughts take they fly leaving you here in your bed
You want to feel the tarmac grounding you without the weight of feelings
Ces personnes accèdent à ce béton, ramènent un bout de ce béton qu’elles font filer, under your nose, you smell it, it weighs you down at night, and flees the day after
Elles font filer la question de pourquoi ne pas aller chercher son propre bout de béton car yours is old, it doesn’t smell anymore, you only feel it weigh you down now, it gets heavier and heavier, day after day, fleeing gets harder and harder
You will have to fly there again one day, otherwise, you will just stay on the spot
Once at the spot maybe feelings won’t fly as high
Fly as high as others made them fly
Remember they don’t weigh the same for everyone
From fear to fly high and freefall
D’attentes trop hautes? De déception?
Ça file un mauvais coton
On préfère rester sur le coton des draps qui amortissent la chute, as you freefall
The fall from so far, so high, sky high
The fall from the high
The high of feeling at home again as you smell the cement under your fee
Sands and Jazz and christian or maybe not so much
We would always be practicing if you didn’t come and support live music
So thank you
Son micro compagnon
Posé
Collé
Au Synthé
Posé au dessus
Du clavier
Il pose
Prend
Repose
Le micro
A chaque intervention
Il switch
De la musique
A la parole
En soulevant le micro
Et en se retournant
He turns round
And speaks to us
Bonsoir
He repeatedly introduces his band
Bass
Drums
And hardly mentions
His name
Christian sands
The only moment we’ll hear
A lyric
Is bruce lee
In the synth
Saying
Be water
My friend
For two hours we’ll all be peers
It’s hard to find water
In the sands
But at sea or in the pier
The task is easier
He swooshes his grey suit round
He’s really all
Suits and smiles
And heads turn round
To set back into the music
It’s funny
His synth intervenes
In the first piece
Only
It talks too
It says to be water
And then drops
Sound drops
Echoing with his neighbor
The bass
Bass stepping on water
Too bad it’s not the sea bass swimming
But you could almost think
With how smooth
They all swim together
On that stage
They really do come from under
His feet move
His feet are moving and dancing
Not just to swoosh around and
Talk to us
But his feet move and dance
Like the bass sounds like it’s
Stepping on water
He’s probably trying to
Be like water
My friends
My peers
And
Our feet echo
With their doing
And the synth
It drops
It’s a synth of water drops
I kinda hear echoing
Like echoes in
Pompei
The whale echoing
In the ruins
And
Drums reverberating from
Pink Floyd intruding
They intruded my mind during that part of the piece
And then I just came back
They caught me back in their sea
Through
Looks and smiles between
Them
And us
And eased me back
Into
Their flow
They’re looking and smiling
At each other
They gently
Encourage and
Follow the
Lead
Of one another
From one to the other
They jump from one to the other
It’s exactly like
Sebastian
Explained to
Mia
In
La
La
Land
One player is doing his thing
And he’s trying to communicate with others
Jazz
Is about compromise and communication
It’s hardly relaxing
Like when Sidney Bechet shot somebody because of a wrong note comment
But
Here
They’re just smiling and communicating
It’s very communicative
It’s almost contagious
It’s catchy
It catches you
And you’re caught up in their
Fishnet
In knots
Woosh
Et introduit
Son
Band
Et nous
Nos noeuds dans le cou
A force de
Suivre au rythme de leur cours
Do
De leur marée
A coups de hochements de tête
As we sway from side to side
A coups de sway de la tête
Du buste
De claquement de nos doigts
De tapotements sur nos genoux
Pour imiter ses doigts qui tapotent
Les touches
Blanches
Noires
Notre seul signal
Indicateur
Notre clap
Our applaudissements
We clap and they go on
One lady at some point was alone
I find it kinda frustrating to interrupt them in their moments of
Communicating
Or solo sharing to
The band
The audience
A solo offering to the room
To the sea of people
And sometimes you hear a cry from one
A cry of appreciation
A cry of help
A cry of recognition
A cry of warning
A cry here and there
Comme ils sautent de l’un à l’autre à
Coups de main
Coups d’oeil
Sometimes you don’t know why
You focus on
One
Or multiple
Sometimes they make space for one or the other
But
Sometimes
You just isolate one
In your ears
Speaking of ears
At one point
I caught
Myself
Looking and listening to the drums
Because of the pearl
On his ear
It was shining
Like no tomorrow
In the middle of the dim sea
I see it
And I see and hear only it and
The arms extended from
It
When it’s his time to take space in this
And
I’m not just the only one listening to him only
He
Uses his drums
As bongos
Odd
His palms are his tools
And his palms are the only thing we hear
We see
And it even surprises me
When from
Out of nowhere
I see
And hear
Sticks used to pursue
His limelight
Soon passed on
A cry from there
And it passes on
One has his knees and shoulders in it too
It’s not just a cry
It’s his whole
That
Is excited
As we are
To
Compliment
Pursue that current
And delve into the next
Thought bubbles I, (can we talk?)
And then turns into
Thought bubbles II, (do not disturb)
Thought bubbles, don’t disturb them
Otherwise whiplash’ll come your way
The currents are agitated
Or maybe it’ll be
Charlie Parker’s fault
Time to decide
Or
The surprise
Of hearing this story
From the mic
After a swoosh
Of suits and smiles
Brubeck
You know Brubeck
Or probably this
Or that
* you need to imagine him playing bits
And pieces
From
Time out
No not the thing you say in a game
The album
Imagine it
In a
Thought
Go on
I won’t disturb you *
I played with Brubeck
When I was a kid with my brother
On the drums there
Brubeck once taught me a song
* proceeds to play a song from Time out
Makes it thrice as long as the one on the album
For our greatest pleasure *
Before playing and talking about Brubeck and
His childhood
He’d spotted a kid in the front row
Fist bumped him
Gotta admit
That’s a cool kid going to see jazz
He said he was about his age when he learned that song from Brubeck
In his home
Turns out
Brubeck was
Kinda my childhood too without me knowing
He’s familiar to me now
But I kinda was like the people in the room who didn’t know his name as a kid sitting on the carpet
I just knew what Christian played on his piano with his magic fingers
I would’ve rung bells to the keynotes
When I was as high as the piano keys
Brubeck
was with me
For the last three weeks too
Weird
I just stumbled upon
Time out
And decided to play it
To work
To fall asleep
With him
Turns out
I heard him tonight
Thrice as long as the original
But still heard him
In a big dark room
Contrary to my cozy
Autumn afternoons
With leaves sticking to my shoes
And raincoat
When coming back from running around the park
To the jazz-filled
living room
When I look back
I wonder
Why did I even ever ask myself why jazz was associated with NY and autumn in my brain
I never knew it was Brubeck specifically playing in the living room back in NY
He blended in with other jazz players like Bill Evans, Coltrane and Davis and all that jazz
In that 40m2 appt
He just played in the living room
Speaking of childhood
Living rooms
Yes but let’s move to the
Kitchen
Do you smell it
Well they tried to make us smell it too
They ended on a

Mom’s Mac and cheese

Mom’s cooking
I guess after rehearsing with greats as Brubeck
You gotta get fuel
With your drum playing brother
Mac and cheese it is
Suits and smiles
The mic is lifted one last time
If you like the concert and want an autograph come after the show at the signing
If you dont like it
Buy it for someone you hate and give it to him
Gotta like a piano player who cracks jokes at a supposed serious concert In suits and smiles
It’s called entertainment
Encore:
What’s the vibe?
Funky?
Groovy?
Both? Everything?
We’ll do it all
And
I guess that deserves a clap
Cuz I just got whiplash
Two hours on
From
Excitement
Nostalgia
And all that jazz
And I just got a whiff of the ladie’s perfume in front of me and she smells like my high school English teacher I saw the day before
And just like Christian it made me :
Je m’éloigne
Je me rapproche

Oh and they did play Olivia
